Review: Fine performances, but let’s keep opera Italian
Sadly, hearing the words of an Italian opera translated into English only left me fervently wishing I didn’t understand the plot of Don Giovanni.
Members of Opera Warwick put their hearts and souls into Thursday’s performance of Mozart’s 18th century masterpiece.

Rory Carver in the title role and Harriet Fletcher as Donna Elvira were even required to sing and swear at some points. Both offered fine performances.
I particularly enjoyed Rory’s body language as he changed from slick womaniser to a man wrestling with his inner demons, while the clothes swapping comedy with Harriet and Samuel Lom (Leporello) worked very well.
So many fine voices were on display. Matthew Bond as Il Commendatore left a big impression, as did all the principals who were well supported by a strong chorus and dancers - at least one of whom kept dashing off stage and slipping down into the pit to join the Opera Warwick Sinfonietta.
Great music and a great effort.
But I really could have done without the translation.
