Calling on Warwickshire’s creative talents

ASPIRING children’s writers could see their work published in an interactive book available to readers across the world in a Stratford Literary Festival competition.

A panel of experts will judge entries from unpublished children’s writers and illustrators and select the most creative tale to be brought to life as an interactive book app for the iPad.

Once downloaded, children can interact and engage with the story by touching the screen, making it move, talk and come to life as they read.

Festival director Annie Ashworth said: “Books are one of the most important ways of interacting with children but tablets and SMART phones have undoubtedly added a new and exciting dimension to how many children read and play.

“For an up-and-coming author/illustrator to be able to have their first story available worldwide is an amazing opportunity and we’re really excited to see the quality of entries.”

Stories being submitted must be aimed at three to six-year-olds. Full details about the competition, which closes on Monday April 9, are on the festival website.

This year’s festival takes place at various venues in Stratford from April 22 to May 7, with additional workshops elsewhere in Warwickshire and headline speakers including journalist and Newsnight presenter Jeremy Paxman, international bestselling author Iain Banks, cook and novelist Prue Leith, current Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and her predecessor Sir Andrew Motion.
