Three Sisters tackles some of the fundamental issues of human existence in a way that is profound but with a lightness of touch.

The play, written more than 100 years ago, is set in pre-Revolutionary Russia and follows the life of a family ‘exiled’ in a provincial town and longing to return to Moscow.

Over a three-year period, it charts the evolving relationships between family members, other townsfolk and the military officers who are based in the town.

Loft spokeswoman Sue Gooch said: “It appears that nothing ever ‘happens’ and yet look below the surface and there is a whole subtext being played out on a very human scale. It has been said that no play has ever conveyed more subtly the transitory beauty and melancholy of the passing moment.

“The play is both amusing and moving and the characters, portraying a wide range of human emotions, leave a lasting impression.

“Whether you are familiar with the work of Chekhov or are experiencing his work for the first time, there is always something new to discover in this simple yet complex story.”
