Comic goings-on in secret as ‘Liz’ meets ‘Maggie’ for chats

The relationship between Britain’s two most powerful women of the 20th century is examined in a new comedy at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry.

Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher were born in the same year – one destined to reign, the other elected to lead. But when the stiff upper lip softened and the gloves came off, which one had the upper hand?

Tricycle Theatre’s Olivier Award-winning production of Moira Buffini’s West End hit comedy Handbagged which visits the Belgrade Theatre as part of UK tour from October 6 to 10. Directed by Indhu Rubasingham, Susie Blake will lead a cast of six, including Kate Fahy and Emma Handy.

Handbagged premiered at the Tricycle Theatre in 2013 where it enjoyed a sell-out seven-week run, winning the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre (2014) and nominations for Best New Comedy and Best Ensemble Performance at the WhatsOnStage Awards (2014). The production transferred to the West End where it ran for a limited 17-week season and received an Olivier Award nomination for ‘Best New Comedy’ 2015.
