Concert will be a testament to the Biblical prophet Elijah

Mendelssohn’s Elijah, which was premiered in 1846 at the Birmingham Festival, depicts various events in the life of the Old Testament prophet Elijah.

It is modelled on the oratorios of Mendelssohn’s Baroque predecessors Bach and Handel, said choir spokesman Mark Beaglehole.

He said its lyrical style and use of orchestral and choral colour showcases Mendelssohn’s genius as an early Romantic composer.

The work is a scored for four soloists, full symphony orchestra (Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra) and a large chorus made up from Royal Leamington Spa Bach Choir and Stamford Choral, conducted by Nigel Stark.

The title role is sung by bass soloist Alistair Ollerenshaw, with Alinka Kozári (soprano), Marion Ramsey (alto) and Richard Monk (tenor).

It is on Saturday March 28, at 7.30pm, in All Saints Church, Leamington.
