Cutting edge theatre in Kenilworth

Modern, European cutting-edge theatre comes to the Talisman Theatre in Kenilworth next Thursday, writes Elena Joannides.

This unusual performance, intended to provoke strong reactions, is a translation of the hit Dutch original, Cloaca, by Maria Goos.

Director Phil Quinn makes no bones about describing the work as “darkly modern” - putting the relationship between four friends under a microscope and watching how men paradoxically cripple and humiliate themselves – all in pursuit of money, power, love and reputation. This popular slice of Dutch theatre – which only runs for three days – has been acclaimed for the way it skewers the male sex with deadly accuracy, pinning down the ambitions, delusions, betrayals and disappointments of its four main characters.

The plot is based on four lifelong friends; Pieter (Hugh Sorrill), a neat, sensitive and fastidious career civil servant, Tom (Nick Knibb) a coke-snorting, manic depressive and debarred lawyer, Jan (Mark Plastow), a ruthlessly ambitious politician and Maarten (Colin Ritchie), a self consumed director believing he’s directing cutting edge theatre.

The play takes its name from their strange meeting cry of “Cloaca” - which not one of the four friends remembers why they say it or what it means.

The show runs from Thursday September 15 to Saturday September 17 starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets are available from the box-office on 856548 and cost £6.
