Dance away to jazzed up tunes by Leamington Paris boys

Familiar tracks by Oasis, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and others are taken to another level by inventive modern jazz band, The Paris 1940s.

Made up of Leamington lads singer Tom Kirkpatrick and Harry Lightfoot on keyboard and saxaphone, guitarist Joe Archer from Stratford and Martin Spencer on bass, the band - who all do their own professional session work alongside - say their sound is one of a kind.

Speaking to the Courier, Joe said: “We draw on jazz from the past and put our own take on songs by using drum and bass, vocals, saxaphone, samba and bossa nova.

People don’t often initially know what the song is, then they recognise it and they quite like what we have done.”

A few years after studying together at music college in Birmingham, the young men met up again in 2011 and started gigging around Leamington and have made an effort to find time for the band ever since.

Joe said: “Our band works because we all come from the same place musically - we studied jazz in its serious form, but feel we want to push the sound forward and bring it to the modern generation.

“It makes it more accessible to people who may not normally choose to listen to jazz.”

The band are playing at the Jam House in St Paul’s Square, Birmingham, on Thursday May 9 from 9.30pm. Admission is free before 9pm and costs £5 after.
