Display series marks group’s 100th anniversary

AN ART group’s 100th anniversary is celebrated this spring in a series of displays, beginning with an art trail in Kenilworth, writes Hana Evans.

Works by current members of the Coventry and Warwickshire Society of Artists (CWSA) will be seen on the Mosaic Art Trail and Art on the Edge 2 – as part of the Kenilworth Festival – in May and June and at The Tiltyard in Kenilworth in August, at an exhibition organised by arts organisation Brink.

Members are also looking forward to their main event, a Centenary Exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery in Coventry in October. The Herbert is a particularly appropriate venue as it was funded by Sir Alfred Herbert when the society was struggling to secure an art gallery in Coventry.

The Herbert exhibition will feature a timeline of the society’s history over the past 100 years and a display of both new and archived works, including paintings and three dimensional pieces.

CWSA president Jane Powell said: “This is a very important and exceptional year for us. We are absolutely delighted that we will be able to hold our Centenary Exhibition at the Herbert in October, and it will be an incredible opportunity to showcase the wealth of local talent that exists in Coventry and Warwickshire today.

“To date, the CWSA has 93 members, many of whom will be exhibiting at the Herbert in October. The artists and our committee are working very hard in preparation for this event, which will feature painting and sculpture by both past and current members.”
