Alan Aykbourn’s 70th play, If I Were You, which the Yorkshire playwright put together while recovering from a stroke, will be staged at the theatre as part of its 80th anniversary season from Wednesday May 1 to Saturday May 11.

The plot involves Mal and Jill Rodale who find they are unable to communicate with each other. Cracks begin to appear in the family.

Jill wants to re-connect with Mal, their son Sam just wants to appear in the school production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, while daughter Chrissie is hiding problems in her marriage to Dean - who to complicate matters works with her father. Meanwhile Mal is always keen to dispense advice, but unwilling to listen.

When Mal and Jill are suddenly compelled to see things from a very different perspective, there are bizarre and comic consequenses.

And as often with a play by Alan Aykbourn, things are not always what they seem.

Having premiered in 2007, the play was brought back to the nation’s attention in 2010 with two major revivals.

Performances start at 7.30pm. For tickets, which cost £8 (concessions £7), call 863334.
