Head back to the ‘70s as original Chevy stage Leamington gig

Leamington rhythm and blues guitarist Steve Walwyn is giving people the chance to take a trip back to the 1970s as he reunites the original Chevy band this week.

Steve will play, for the first time in 31 years, with Martin Cure, Bob Poole, Paul Shanahan and Chaz Chaplin, at the fifth Kelly’s Night at the Zephyr Lounge on Wednesday.

Although Chevy played a reunion gig for Macmillan Cancer Support at the Spa Centre a few years ago, the original members, who formed the band in the 1970s, have never appeared on stage together since 1982. But all five have continued to perform music.

Steve, who got the Kelly’s Nights going in February, said: “Since I started the Kelly’s Nights, I have been getting back together all the bands I have played with.

The glaring omission was Chevy, so I contacted all the guys and said I would really like to do this - and they agreed.

“We have had a few rehearsals and it’s been coming along really well, although the first one was weird. We hadn’t even been in the same room for 30 years, let alone played together.

“On the other hand, it was like winding the clock back. We have written all the songs ourselves. Playing them again after so long seemed new and familiar at the same time.”

Tickets to the gig, which starts at the Spencer Street venue at 8pm, cost £10. Leamington band The Lamps are also playing.
