Holocaust horrors tackled sensitively by young Leamington drama group

A stark and powerful dramatic representation of the story of a German Jewish family persecuted by Nazis has been taken to the stage by young actors.

Members of Stagecoach Leamington - aged between ten and 17 - worked with filmwriter Kevin Hicks to create their own stage adaptation of his film, The Journey - which they then performed at Trinity School in Leamington.

The story includes details of the segregation of schoolchildren, the gun-point separation of the family and the transportation of children in cattle trucks to their fates of forced labour, medical experimentation and gas-chambers in the Nazis’ death-camps.

After watching the show, Kevin Hicks said: “Seeing the youngsters embrace such a difficult subject and then perform their interpretation of my script to such a high standard was just fantastic. They are a very talented bunch.”

The dance troupe’s principal Jacqui Dance said: “Very few of the students knew about this period in history, but they immersed themselves into the subject and worked hard to understand the horrors of it all. Their grasp of the detail and the enormity of the story was remarkable.”
