Leamington artist’s peaceful paintings impress religious society

A NATIONAL religious organisation has been so impressed by the work of a Leamington artist that it has included his images in its annual year book.

The Society of Friends – or Quakers – contacted Jean-Pierre Kunzler recently to ask if they could use his work for the publication, which is a selection of writings on peace and reconciliation, as they found the serenity in the pictures appropriate to accompany the text.

They had spotted his artworks at an exhibition held at the Birmingham Institute earlier this year.

Jean-Pierre, who has had letters of thanks from the Vatican and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown for sending them his artwork, said: “I used to show work at the Quaker cafe in Warwick and I have donated a lot of work to churches. A lot of my paintings seem to be going to gentle places.”

In Leamington people can from Monday see a selection of Jean-Pierre’s latest work - in a collection called Viola Hurricane - at Gaia wholefoods shop in Regent Place.

He said: “I like the contrasts between the beautiful sound of the viola and the idea of the force of nature of the hurricane.

“The combination of the two things is a nice anagram of the bipolar that I live with.

“It’s also what most of us go through in life.”

The Quakers’ Annual Year Book is now available. Viola Hurricane is running until the end of November.
