The eighth British International Mini Print Exhibition, which opened at the Print Studio in London in April, also features ten larger invited prints from well-known artists, including Morgan Doyle, Wuon Gean Ho and Maggi Hambling.

A call for entries was made by the Printmakers Council two years ago and entries from artists from 39 countries were received. The best were selected by a panel made up of Gill Saunders, senior print curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, David Ferry, head of printmaking at Cardiff School of Art and Design, and Michael Kennedy, chairman of the seventh British International Mini Print Exhibition.

The prints are on an unusually small scale - within an 8 by 10cm rectangle. Gill Saunders said: “Working on a small scale demands control and focus - to produce something which invites an intimacy between artist and audience or something which has a visual impact out of proportion to its size.”

Michael Kennedy said: “The variety of print process included is very wide and includes fine examples of traditional skills as well as the more contemporary; everything from mezzotint to digital and the informal and experimental as well. Subject matter and treatment similarly comprise a broad spectrum - there is everything here from naturalistic portraiture to abstraction and on to more contemporary preoccupations.”

The exhibition at the gallery opens on Thursday and runs until October 6. Entry is free. There is a programme of events and workshops running alongside - for adults and children. For details, call 742700.
