The 82-year-old, who has been going to the house since he became a Freemason in 1982, is launching his third book on the site, Further Recollections of a Country Mansion: a Historic Look at Guy’s Cliffe from the 5th Century to the Present Day, at Guy’s Cliffe’s first day of conducted tours on Sunday (June 30).

Mr Roberts, who lives in Nuneaton, is so fascinated by the site that he even travelled to the West Indies to research its history.

He said: “The site was built from the wealth of sugar plantations in the West Indies. The owners had slaves working for them in St Kitts. So I went over to the island and was given access to records going back to 1600.”

Mr Roberts has also been through the records of John Rows, a 15th century Warwick historian, and discovered how Guy’s Cliffe was involved in the Wars of the Roses.

The house and grounds is starting conducted tours on Sundays from this weekend. Mr Roberts will be selling copies on the first day, while they will then go on sale at Warwick Books and Kenilworth Books and be available to loan from Warwickshire libraries.
