Old films screening at Warwick Arts Centre show village and city life

JOURNALIST and keen local historian Peter Walters has agreed to introduce another selection of old films at Warwick Arts Centre.

The Reel Story, at 6.30pm on September 27, echoes the new television series The Reel History of Britain which has just started on BBC2.

All the latest extracts have been chosen from miles of local footage preserved by the Media Archive of Central England (MACE).

They include scenes from village life in Radford Semele in 1952 and the fire that destroyed Stratford’s first Shakespearean theatre in the 1920s. Peter said: “There’s also a short 1958 film celebrating the re-development of Coventry called Phoenix City and we’ve included just one recently made film shot by Derek Nisbet talking to the men who built the city’s ring road.”

He added: “This is the fifth time I’ve introduced MACE films at the Arts Centre. The way we lived has an abiding fascination for people and we’ve got a terrific package of films offering humour and pathos, as well as pure nostalgia.”

Tickets cost £7.10 or £5.85 concessions or £5.30 each for groups of five and above. Call 024 7652 4524 or visit www.warwickartscentre.co.uk
