Quirky art celebrates Shakespeare festival

There is one grain of rice for each person in the UK - 62 million - in Of All The People in All The World, an art piece by theatre company Stan’s Cafe, in the venue’s PACCAR Room.

Starting from Saturday, members of the company - dressed in smart caretaker uniforms - will, over the course of three months, fully measure out the rice into labelled piles representing a wide range of human population statistics.

The installation will respond in real time to news as it happens during the World Shakespeare Festival.

Covering sports, arts, politics, business, travel, the environment and other issues - including the Olympics - the piece, which has travelled to venues and festivals around the world, can be seen until July 31.

Also coming to the theatre will be Living Walls, three dynamic digital projections by artists Squidsoup, at the Colonnade and Relic Wall, from April 20 until September 23.

The walls will be brought to life as animated texts and quotes from Shakespearean characters will react and change according to the actions of passers-by - often with playful results.

People can watch words wriggling across the walls, while patterns morph into insect like-creatures, scuttling around and leaving curses, messages and questions in their wake.
