See the life of Piaf in a play at Leamington theatre

THE glamour and squalor of the life of a world-renowned French singer will be brought to the Leamington’s Loft Theatre.

Pam Gems’ Piaf, which charts the adult life of Edith Gassion - known to all as ‘Piaf’, which translates as ‘sparrow’ - will take the stage from Wednesday until Saturday April 14.

Including some of Piaf’s most-loved songs, such as La Vie en Rose, Mon Dieu and Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien, the play, which premiered in 1978, vividly explores the rise and fall of this complex, fragile and enigmatic performer, who found fame after the back streets of Paris.

The lead role is taken on by Loft newcomer, Hannah Farquharson, while Chris Gilbey-Smith directs the production and the musical direction is by Alastair Evans.

Chris said: “Recreating Piaf’s turbulent life has been a real challenge for both the actors and production team.

“The cinematic feel of the play has been tackled head-on by our fantastic teams in lighting, sound, wardrobe and props, working with the cast to give the audience a real ‘Piaf’ experience.”

Performances begin at 7.45pm (except Sunday) .
