Steve and friends are back at Leamington’s parish church

The Dr Feelgood guitarist, who has been performing professionally for more than 30 years, specially formed a new band, Steve Walwyn and Friends, to be the first non-classical band to play at Leamington’s parish church for the inaugural All Saints’ Arts Festival.

And he enjoyed it so much that he has enlisted the support of fellow musicians Kristy Gallacher and former Specials guitarist Horace Panter to perform the finale concert for this year’s event, which takes place from Friday June 29 to Sunday July 1.

Steve, who has known Horace since he entered the music scene in the 1970s and formed a friendship with Kristy after they were both on the bill at last year’s Kenilworth Festival, said: “Our first performance was really successful.

“The church is a brilliant space to play in and a magnificient building. I don’t think any band had played there before we did at last year’s festival. We had a great atmosphere - we arranged it like a jazz cafe.”

He added: “I had been worried about the sound last year, but it was really good.

“We want to make people aware that the venue is available not just for church events, but other events too.”

Kicking off with what he describes as a “gentler” semi-acoustic set, Steve and the band will be followed by Kristy and the gig, which takes place on the Sunday of the three-day festival, will end with an electric set with Horace on bass.

Steve, who celebrated his 56th birthday last weekend, said: “I am still performing all over the world and I enjoy getting up and playing on stage. Sometimes the travelling can get a bit weary. But it’s part of the job.”

The gig starts at 8.30pm. Tickets cost £10 in advance or £12 on the door, with proceeds going towards the church.

Other highlights for the three-day event include a Vintage Jazz evening with canapes, a photography exhibition showcasing the works of Warwickshire College students and live music performances from classical groups and the Sambassadors of Groove.
