The best of local art on show together at new exhibition

The biannual Coventry Arts Consortium show, the only event of its kind in Warwickshire, starts at the Herbert Gallery in Coventry tomorrow (Saturday) at 10am.

Coventry and Warwickshire Society of Artists, Coventry Art Guild, Baginton Art Group and the Coventry Watercolour Society make up the consortium. Each artist may enter up to four paintings plus sculptures and a member from each society is asked to be on the selection panel and help to choose the work to go in the exhibition.

Consortium chairman Susan Moore said: “The overall standard of local artists work is excellent and the variety of subjects and styles is amazing, from small watercolour studies to very large oil paintings.”

More than 90 paintings and sculptures will be on display, with prices ranging from £35 to several thousand pounds.

Three award-winners have been named following a selection day last weekend. The Lord Mayor of Coventry, Cllr Michael Hammon, selected his favourite painting, Quiet Afternoon on the Leam by Shirley Green. The selection panel’s favourite painting was Grand Canal, Venice by Wallace F. Brown and the chairman’s award went to Polperro Image by Lionel Bull.
