Humpty and the egg in Kenilworth panto

A well-loved and timeless nursery rhyme will be brought to life at the Talisman Theatre in Kenilworth this month.

The theatre’s 60th family pantomime is Humpty Dumpty, directed by Stephen Duckham, taking the stage from Saturday (December 21) until Saturday January 4 at 7.30pm each day, with additional matinees on Saturdays and Sundays at 3.30pm.

The plot begins 20 years before. A wicked Sorcerer tried to usurp the good King Cole of Eggshellia, but he was unsuccessful and banished. But before he left, he uttered a curse that the kingdom would be drained of sunlight and happiness. The Court Magician managed to suspend the curse and trap it in a giant egg. The egg, guarded by Humpty Dumpty (Michael Brooks), sits on the palace wall and as long as it remains intact, Eggshellia is safe.

With a rich and varied set designed by Wendy Morris, director Stephen is promising “all the fun, music, magic and spectacle that has come to make this theatre’s panto a crown jewel of the art”.

Publicity director John Francis added that there may be the odd ‘egg gag’. He said: “Humpty Dumpty isn’t a well-known panto but a number of the theatre’s management team felt that many of the traditional offerings had become quite stale and formulaic. Dump the Christmas humpties and come and see Humpty Dumpty!”
