Panto for all ages and a show just for kids

This year’s panto at the Belgrade Theatre will be a bit of a family affair – veteran panto dame Iain Lauchlan will share the stage with daughter Morna Macpherson.

Dad will be Widow Twankey – complete with seven costume changes – while his daughter will play Aladdin.

Lauchlan’s dame has become a bit of an institution at the Belgrade, stretching back to 1988, and appealing to all ages.

He said: “It’s always a joy to perform panto in Coventry as the audiences are always so appreciative. They really know how to enjoy themselves.

“Aladdin is a fabulous show. It has one of the best baddies, Abanazaar – the most evil panto villain of them all – as well as an incredible variety of settings taking in old Peking, ancient Egypt and beyond.”

Lauchlan’s Christmas show for pre-schoolers, Santa’s Dizzy Day, will also premiere at the Belgrade before a UK tour.

He said: “Instead of parents having to queue for hours to see Santa, I thought, why not bring the experience of visiting a grotto to the theatre. It’s a show which is specifically pitched for them which has all the elements they like – engaging characters, a simple story, puppets and songs. At the end, children will have the chance to meet Santa and to deliver him their Christmas wish list.”

Aladdin runs until January 10. Santa’s Dizzy Day is on December 5, 6 and 15 to 24.
