Post 9-11 play visits Leamington theatre

A real-life husband-and-wife play a couple in a play set in the aftermath of 9-11 which is visiting the Loft Theatre in Leamington next week.

Neil LaBute’s The Mercy Seat will be brought to the theatre by the Coventry group the Criterion Theatre on Friday September 12 and Saturday September 13 at 7.30pm each evening.

It is September 12 2011 and Ben, played by Pete Gillam, sees a way out of his marriage that he never thought possible. But now the chance is there, is it really what he wants? He and his lover, played by his wife Anne-marie Greene, are forced to examine their affair and their future together.

As LaBute describes it, The Mercy Seat focuses “on the selfish acts of my protagonist on a day that most Americans still want to believe was filled with heroism and personal sacrifice”.
