Propeller returns to Coventry for bard’s anniversary

An internationally-acclaimed all-male theatre company known for its rigorous approach to Shakespeare is bringing two comedies to the Belgrade in Coventry.

Forming part of celebrations for the 450th anniversary of the birth of the Warwickshire-born bard, Propeller will perform its adaptations of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Comedy of Errors at the theatre from Tuesday February 11 to Saturday February 15.

Propeller’s founder and artistic director Edward Hall, who is also artistic director of London’s Hampstead Theatre, said: “We want to rediscover Shakespeare simply by doing the plays as we believe they should be done: with great clarity, speed and full of as much imagination in the staging as possible.”

Just as it was in Shakespeare’s day, Propeller’s productions are performined by an all-male cast - but the company are also known for mixing a rigorous approach to the text with a modern physical aesthetic. They have been influenced by mask work, animation and both classic and modern film and music from a variety of periods.

Belgrade Theatre audiences have previously enjoyed highly praised Propeller productions of Richard III, Twelfth Night, Henry V and The Winter’s Tale.
