Review: Tennant mesmerises in royal role on stage

Only good things are to be expected when a name like David Tenant is added to the list of lead roles for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s latest show.

The three hour work by Shakespeare came out in its very barest form. No modern adaptations, no quirky add-ins and no unexpected twists for the latest showing of the somewhat lesser known, Richard II.

And all working to create a completely mesmerising performance from the start as the cast lead the audience through every up and down with complete awe.

Jumping right in with a heavenly and piercing choir alongside a strong opening scene as every actor made his mark on the stage, things only got better as the evening went on.

The story followed the king and his court from the top, through exile, war, love, personal gain and finally death.

A slightly distracting look by Tennant who took on Christ-like robes and long flowing locks to deliver his lead performance, but brilliant all the same.

Capturing every aspect of King Richard’s fall with a gritty and vast mix of confidence, fear, anger, defiance, humour and all the emotions in between, the actor had audiences in the palm of his hand every step of the way.

Staring alongside famous faces including Michael Pennington as John of Gaunt, Nigel Lindsay and Oliver Ford Davies, the big names were certainly a draw for their eager audience.

But in no way to overlook the rest of the cast in what was a quite brilliant and captivating show from start to end.

Not many around the room were not leant forward in their seats to catch every emotional encounter, riled up with the rousing speeches and in roars of laughter as the jokes rolled in.

Audiences no doubt expected big things from the big names and impressive band of actors and nothing disappointed.

The energy on stage was infectious throughout and the scenes and plot delivery absolutely captivating for even those who beforehand know nothing of the story.

A powerful and captivating performance by hugely talented actors. And it’s success was easily summed up in the faces of every one as they faced enthusiastic and well earnt rounds of applause from their elated and suitably impressed members of the audience.

Richard II is at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre until November 16 and will be broadcast live on November 13 to cinemas across the UK.
