Witty church comedy opens Kenilworth theatre’s autumn season

Richard Everett’s Entertaining Angels takes the stage at the Kenilworth theatre from Wednesday until Saturday September 14.

The story follows clergy wife Grace, who has spent a lifetime on her best behaviour. Now, following the death of her husband Bardolph, she is enjoying the new-found freedom to do and say exactly as she pleases.

But the return of her eccentric missionary sister Ruth, together with some disturbing revelations, force Grace to confront some truths about her life and relationships with those around her.

The Priory team describe the play as “a comedy with sharp edged wit”, picking out Grace’s one-liners in particular - such as, when greeting the new vicar: ‘You’re 31, I’m 61. What can you possibly have to say to me about life, death or anything else, that I couldn’t possibly have thought of for myself?’

Grace, played by Susi Walker, manages to argue with her sister Ruth, played by Anita Dalton, her daughter Jo, played by Anne Bowen - and her dead husband, played by Nigel Sharp. On top of this, she insults the parishoners, the faithful and the new vicar Sarah, played by Lydia Ward.

The play’s evocative set has been designed by Steve Boden of Imagine Theatre.
