US tour on cards for Warwick theatre group

TOURS of the United States, an open-air performance in St Nicholas Park, Warwick, and a major arts award - everything seems to be going well for members of Playbox Theatre.

Recently the company was awarded the Action for Children’s Arts Award 2011 in recognition of the huge impact it has had on the lives of local young people.

Founded 25 years ago in Kenilworth, the theatre is now based at The Dream Factory in Shelley Avenue, Warwick, and has outlets in Kenilworth, Leamington, Banbury, Solihull and Chipping Campden.

Former young members, who were serious about an acting career, are currently appearing in stage, screen and television roles all over the world.

Their epic new show, Metropolis - Remixed, a contemporary take on Fritz Lang’s silent movie masterpiece, will be one of three new works performed during a tour of Los Angeles at the invitation of the Santa Monica Playhouse.

But local audiences will also get a chance to see the piece in St Nicholas Park where it will be shown on Sunday, July 1, the day the Olympic torch is due to arrive in the town.

Artistic director Stewart McGill said: “It’s really full steam ahead this summer and the culmination of a busy year - whether it’s theatre, circus, dance, musical theatre of film, Playbox is making it happen for hundreds of local youngsters.

Plans including US tours, outdoor and indoor tours and on Sunday, July 1, the first sequence from the epic new show Metropolis – Remixed is to be staged at St Nicholas Park, Warwick for the Olympic Torch arrival in the town.
