Vote for your winner in Leamington gallery’s Olympic poster bid

LEAMINGTON people can join in Olympics and Paralympics celebrations by voting in a competition at the Pump Room gallery.

Posters themed on the 2012 games, created by leading UK artists, are now on display at the gallery – and now it is inviting visitors to vote for their favourite.

The two most popular posters will be displayed in the summer exhibition, Going for Gold!, which will celebrate the sporting heroes and the sporting heritage of Warwick district.

Senior curatorial officer Vicki Slade said: “Posters have always played an important role in the run-up to the games.

“We are delighted that we can show these stunning contemporary editions.

“It will be fascinating to see which ones will be the public’s favourites – any of them will complement the exhibition.”

And to herald in the arrival of the Olympic Torch at the Pump Room Gardens on Sunday, July 1, families can join in a special free Art Cart session on the day, from 1pm to 3pm, during which they can design their own Olympic poster to take home (suitable for under 12s).

Also taking place this summer is a free drawing competition to mark the forthcoming Heritage Open Days.

All entered artworks will go on display in the Royal Priors shopping centre on Friday, August 31 and Saturday, September 1 as part of a Heritage Open Days exhibition.

Artists from the Association of Midland Artists will select one prize-winner from three categories – six years and under, seven to10-year-olds and 11 to 15-year-olds – each receiving a book voucher.

With the help of free art materials provided at the gallery, children can enter a postcard-sized artwork inspired by their favourite building in Leamington.
