The paintings - on loan from Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery - are now on display in their original location in the castle’s Great Hall for the first time in a generation.

Born in 1697, Canaletto began his career as a theatrical scene painter as an apprentice to his father, painter Bernardo Canal. Inspired by the Roman ‘vedutista’ (landscape painter) Giovanni Paolo Pannini, he started painting the daily life of Venice and its people.

He moved to London in 1746 and painted views of the capital - and these of Warwick Castle in 1748-49 - until 1755.
