Warwickshire choir has its handle on Handel!

A POPULAR Warwickshire choir will be filling the halls of a Chipping Campden church this month.

St James’s Singers will arrive flushed with the success of their September show at the Ilmington Festival where they opened the proceedings to a crowd of around 500.

Now on Saturday they will perform, with long serving conductor Julian Harris, at Saint James’s Church in Chipping Campden in a concert entitled An Evening with Mr Handel.

The evening will include one of the four Coronation Anthems, My Heart is Inditing, which is “by far the most beautiful of the four – even though it is heresy to say so when the better-known Zadok is in the group,” said Julian Harris.

“The ticket price is worth that one movement alone – particularly as we have the amazing Alexandra Gibson to sing the solo. Bring your tissues!”

Other pieces include the Music for the Royal Fireworks, the Chandos Anthem, Let God Arise, and the Foundling Hospital Anthem, which is packed with surprises, both in the lyrics and its powerful final movement.

The whole concert will be performed on authentic instruments as all the Saint James’s Players are attached to the most prestigious baroque orchestras in the land. Trumpeter Rob Formison, who wowed Chipping Campden audiences at the festival’s live Radio 3 broadcast with Florilegium in May, will lead the cast of players, and will be supported by Chipping Campden’s own organist Richard Stephens.

The soloists are also specialists in the baroque field, having appeared many times with groups such as The Sixteen, The Monteverdi Choir and the Academy of Ancient Music. Soprano, Helen Neeves, alto, Alexandra Gibson, tenor, David Brown and bass, James Gower will make up a talented quartet.
