Wombats weady to take on the world

AS jobs go one which involves touring the world and meeting plenty of interesting people can never be bad, especially when you’ve got your friends with you to share the experience.

This is what Tord Overland-Knudsen, the bass player for popular rock band The Wombats, has been doing for the last nine years.

Formed in 2003 after meeting at the Liverpool institute of performing arts the trio, which also include Liverpudlians Matthew Murphy and Dan Haggis, are performing at Warwick University on Tuesday February 21 having had a busy summer playing at major festivals including V and Glastonbury.

Tord said: “Having your friends with you makes it feel less than a job I suppose.

“It’s not just the guys in the band but the crew as well like our tour manager and sound engineer.

“We all started off in the same uni or we met them through the local scene so its great that we’re touring together.”

Having released their mainstream debut LP The Wombats Proudly Present...A Guide to Love Loss and Desperation in 2007, the band spent some time touring before releasing The Wombats Proudly Present...This Modern Glitch in April last year.

In the brief break they had this winter the trio have been writing material for another release, preferring to focus on the creative side of their work when they are not on the road.

Known for hits such as Kill the Director and the floor filler Let’s Dance To Joy Division The Wombats have a growing fan base across the world .

Tord said: “We’re just three guys who love making music so to be able to do it full time is a privilege.

“We have a lot of fun but of our music also has a serious element and we certainly don’t take our approach lightly, although it’s likely that when you see us playing we’ll be having fun.”
