"I want to build a fairer and more inclusive community": Meet the first Muslim woman to be elected Mayor of Rugby
A borough councillor has made history by becoming the first Muslim woman to be elected Mayor of Rugby.
Cllr Nooria Sayani was elected Mayor of Rugby last Thursday (May 21) at the Annual Meeting of Rugby Borough Council.
She said: “As the new Mayor, it is an honour and pleasure to serve the people of Rugby. As the birthplace of Rugby Football and in the spirit of the sport “we are stronger together” we have a longstanding and proud history of civic society, built on an inclusive vision.
"This is the lifeblood of our community and today I would like to recognise and celebrate the work of all volunteers and the hundreds of organisations and socially responsible businesses, who have dedicated their time and given compassion to all.”

She said this collaboration, teamwork and inclusive vision is what makes Rugby a shining example of civic pride.
Cllr Sayani said: “My chosen theme this year is Pluralism the 3Cs – Community Compassion Cohesion - which embraces this inclusive vision.
"Pluralism is the intentional choice to learn from one another, build bridges and share in the rich tapestry of diversity, creativity and our common humanity.
"Inclusive interaction, builds a stronger, creative, knowledge rich community, able to find solutions, adapt easily to new challenges and encourage peaceful communities.
"We are living in challenging times and Rugby has great connections and it is in a very strong position, to build more partnerships and capacity for the future.
Mayor of Rugby.”
Her term of office runs until May 2027.
