Jobs hope for Gaydon with news of baby Aston Martin

A JOBS boost looks set with the news that Gaydon-based car maker Aston Martin is to build a luxurious small city car.

Around 1,300 work at Aston Martin in Gaydon and the new Cygnet car is scheduled to go into production next year.

However, the company is not yet revealing how many jobs could be created by the baby Aston Martin.

A spokesman said: “We are not confirming any jobs as yet but we will bring out some more information towards the end of the month.

“I think we can assume we are going to need people to build the car, but as yet we can’t confirm numbers.”

Designed at Gaydon, the three-door hatchback will have a price tag of around £30,000.

At just three metres long –
nearly 10ft – it will be the smallest car produced by the company to date.

There has been industry speculation that up to 4,000 a year could be made, but the Aston Martin spokesman would not be drawn on production figures.

He added: “It’s definitely going to be built at Gaydon but we are not confirming numbers.”

Initially the Cygnet, which started off as a concept car in March, will only be available to existing Aston Martin owners.

Aston Martin, known more for the petrol-guzzling roar of its models, hope the Cygnet will comply with tighter European Union emissions regulations that will come into force next year. The Cygnet is based on the Toyota IQ.
