He was 78.

"My thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time, and I send my deepest condolences.

“I know that his dedication and decency as an MP helped the people of this constituency immensely.

"As a local campaigner he fought against the introduction of GM modified crops and ensured that Rugby was not an area where they were trialled.

“As an MP during the last Labour government, he campaigned for jobs and training, which helped the establishment of the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Ansty.

“He worked hard to combat poverty and social exclusion, and fought to protect local health services such as those delivered from the Hospital of St Cross.

“His legacy of public service continues to inspire us all.”

Borough councillor Claire Edwards said: “I had the huge privilege of working for Andy in the constituency.

"For anyone involved in politics, being able to make a difference is something to be treasured, and Andy certainly did that.

"His background as a social worker meant his passion for social justice and fighting poverty underpinned everything he did.”

We’ll bring you more tributes and information as it comes in.
