"I was so very proud to represent our town at the Rugby Whitehall Cenotaph": Mayor leads civic party for Remembrance parade

Crowds of proud Rugbeians turned out to see the parade and service at the War Memorial Gates on Remembrance Sunday (November 9).

Representatives from around 20 contingents, including the Royal British Legion, the 250 Squadron of the Queen's Gurkha Signals, the 4th Battalion of the Parachute Regiment and ex-service organisations, gathered in Hillmorton Road to be reviewed by the Mayor before marching on parade to the War Memorial Gates.

A two-minute silence took place during the service before the Deputy Lieutenant of Warwickshire, the Mayor and representatives from the contingents laid wreaths at the gates.

The Rev Edmund Newey led the service, assisted by Father Aji Alphonse.

Wayne Perry, of the Rugby No.1 branch of the Royal British Legion, delivered the exhortation, while the Mayor's Cadet, Cadet First Class Maddison Head-Dunn of Rugby Sea Cadets, read the Kohima Epitaph.

Cllr Brown said: “I was so very proud to represent our town at the Rugby Whitehall Cenotaph today (November 9).

“It's always a significant day for our town. So many gave their lives so that we can live freely, and so many continue to live with the impact that active service has on minds and emotions.

"We came together to thank them, and tell them we will never forget them.”

The Salvation Army provided music for the service.

On Armistice Day, Tuesday 11 November, Rugby Borough Council supports the Royal British Legion in the tradition of a two-minute silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in memory of those who gave their lives for their country.

Maroons will be fired at Whitehall Recreation Ground.
