Every family across Lutterworth is being urged to fork out £10 each in a desperate SoS bid to save their hospital.

Mary Guppy, 77, is helping to spearhead efforts to totally refurbish and re-equip the threatened Feilding Palmer Hospital.

And she is now urging every local home to shell out a tenner to haul the much-loved Victorian hospital into the 21st century.

Mary, of South Kilworth, near Market Harborough, told the Harborough Mail: “We will do everything in our power to keep a hospital in Lutterworth.

“Ideally we will drag Feilding Palmer Hospital back from the brink and make it a hospital fit for the 2020s.

“And to do that we are asking every household in and around Lutterworth to donate a minimum of £10 to make this happen.”

The fired-up health activist, whose husband John used to be a GP at the revered 121-year-old Gilmorton Road hospital, added: “Feilding Palmer Hospital has been a massive asset to Lutterworth since way back in 1899.

“Many thousands of patients have been treated there over the many decades since – rather than being forced to go to Leicester or Coventry.

“We desperately need a hospital with enough beds to cope in Lutterworth.

“That’s going to become even more critical after the enormous Lutterworth East development has got the go-ahead.

“That will bring up to 10,000 more people into our neck of the woods.

“These people will need to be treated and looked after somewhere – and a bang up-to-date hospital in Lutterworth is the obvious place for them to go.”

Mary said their new ambitious ‘tenner appeal’ has got off to a positive start.

“A crowdfunding page has been set up and local people are already beginning to contribute.

People right across Lutterworth feel very strongly about this,” said the formidable hospital battler.

“They are telling me that they are happy and willing to chip in to refurbish Feilding Palmer or build a new hospital altogether.

“Our initial target is £5,000.

“But we will need to generate at least £100,000 to get us there.

“And we need to get our rallying call out to the public throughout our patch because we are going to need everyone behind us 100 per cent.”
