December 19 , 1919

The body of a newly-born male child was found in the manger of an open barn at Hillmorton on Saturday and was subject of an inquest at the Red Lion Inn on Tuesday. At present the mother has not been traced.

The baby was clean and wrapped in a skirt, in the barn about 300 yards from the highway.

The Coroner (Dr Asplin) informed the jury that the death was probably due to inattention at birth, but there were two kinds of negligence, simple and criminal, the latter being equivalent to manslaughter. He therefore warned them that they must have sufficient proof before returning such a verdict.

The great Christmas rush - slower to build momentum in Rugby - is on and making up for lost time. Shoppers have braved bad weather and flocked into Rugby eager to snap up last minute Christmas presents.

The town was crowded on Saturday and the trend continued this week. Gift-hunters were undeterred by the cold weather and shop tills worked overtime. Buses arriving in Rugby from the villages have been generally full and people in cars have had to look for parking spaces.

December 15 , 1994

Tributes have been paid to a woman who devoted her life to teaching.

Former Rugby High School teacher Pat Ecker died on her 71st birthday, December 5.

She was a pupil at Rugby High School, being headgirl in her final year and gained a first class degree from Birmingham University during the Second World War.

She taught her subject at Rugby High, taking up the post of head of department, which she held until retiring ten years ago.
