The question of the necessity or otherwise of the continuance of the Profiteering Committee was brought forward by the Chairman of the Committee (Mr Yates).

He said there was so very little for them to do that the council should consider whether they were justified in continuing their existence.

Since the formation of the committee they only had to investigate one complaint and their colleagues of the Rural Authority had no complaints whatsoever.

Under the Profiteering Act the only question they were concerned with was as to the retailers’ charges to the public.

An attack on Rugby Borough Council’s decision to open a second refuse dump in Newbold has come from the rector, the Rev Robert Mighall, who is appealing for funds to buy bulbs or shrubs to improve the appearance of the area.

Commenting on a plan to begin tipping household refuse in the former sludge lagoons off Park Road and Lea Crescent, Mr Mighall said: “Yet again, it seems Newbold is to become the dumping ground for the Borough’s rubbish, as well as the Borough’s sewage.”

Richard Whittlesea has a driving ambition – to break the world land speed record. And his dream could soon become reality as he has built a 21-foot machine with a helicopter engine, giving it twice the power of a Formula One racing car.

This year he hopes to break Richard Noble’s British record of 259mph, set with the jet engined Thrust 2. And next year, on a dry salt lake in Australia or America, he will attempt the international land speed record for wheel-driven cars currently held by American Al Teague at 409mph.
