What’s more, a friendly welcome, lots of free advice and no high-pressure sales awaits anyone looking for some support to maintain their independence.

Whether you are shopping for yourself, a friend or a relative, in need of some advice, or have a clear idea of something specific you need, then visiting Enhanced Mobility for a chat with Craig Greenway is the best first step.

Craig took over the shop in March this year – exactly 10 years after it was opened by the previous owners.

He has now packed the store with a wider selection of equipment – including wheelchairs, scooters and power chairs, furniture, walking aids and a host of smaller items to make everyday tasks easier.

“It’s a fairly small shop but I have doubled the amount of stuff we have in here now,” says Craig. “You can hardly see the walls for all the things we have on there – from van openers to zip pullers, things to help you get your socks on to big playing cards.

And if he doesn’t have what you want in store he can show you examples and get it ordered and delivered, usually within 48 hours.

This is very much a small independent business. After a lifetime in the building trade – Craig is a skilled carpenter and property developer – and a spell running a kennels alongside, he decided it was time for a change and jumped at the chance to buy the shop.

“I’m absolutely loving it,” says Craig, who likes to spend time getting to know the person before they make a purchase. He says it’s rewarding to see customers who might come in struggling or concerned, and to see them a few weeks later looking happier, getting out and about and enjoying life once more.

“There’s no need to be stuck at home in a chair, there’s a solution for most things,” says Craig. “I enjoy being able to give people their independence back.”

“Often people come in looking for one thing, but they go out with something else much more suitable,” he says. He spends time talking to the customers to find out what restrictions or challenges they have to mobility or movement so that he can advise them on the best option – be that a straightforward boot wheelchair or a state-of-the-art power scooter.

Size, weight and ability are all important factors when choosing the right equipment.

“I’d never let anyone leave the shop with a scooter for example, until they are confident about using it and I know it is right for them,” he says. “It’s 20 questions with me before I know which product to suggest to them – budget is a factor, but so is what you want to use it for, how heavy the person is, is it going to be lifted in and out of a car, and who is going to do that?”

Often after the shop has closed for the day Craig will be out in the van delivering equipment to people at home, in nursing or care settings, or out doing repairs for those who cannot get to the shop.

“It’s not just about selling it and making money, I like to get to know the people and make sure it’s the right thing for them,” he says. “Sometimes they come in expecting to buy one thing, and they go out with something completely different.”

Buy, hire and repair

As well as selling new equipment, Enhanced Mobility also sells some quality second-hand equipment and has some items for hire.

Getting a new battery fitted, having your wheelchair serviced or repaired is also part of the service when you are one of Craig’s customers.
