Agents John Earle believe that this is the first time since this fascinating barrelled roof lock cottage was built around 1812 that it has been brought to the market for sale.

Only six of these cottages were constructed by the canal workers building the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

The canal through to Stratford was finally opened in 1816 and reached its peak of activity around 1838, when Queen Victoria was on the throne.

From the towpath a brace timber front door opens into the living room with a double glazed window looking down the lawned garden. There is a fine old cast iron range, existing oven and a mezzanine bed deck above the fire.

The rest of the accommodation comprises: two bedrooms, inner hall, bathroom, breakfast kitchen with solid fuel Rayburn with back boiler heating domestic hot water and radiator, utility/boot room:

There is a lawned garden to the south with paved path leading round to the tow path, back gardens and out-buildings.

The workshop/woodshed has a twin pitch felt covered roof, housing six 12-volt accumulator batteries.

To the side of the roof there are five solar panels to charge the batteries.

Across the yard there is a block and timber poultry house:

Beyond the orchard there is a pasture field extending to some two acres with small pond to far end.

There is a brick built septic tank constructed circa 2004. The water supply is pumped from the well in the lawned garden up into a tank in the roof space over the kitchen.

The telephone is connected, complete with Wi-Fi and there is a strong mobile signal.

To find this property the best place to park a car is on Finwood Road and then walk about 2/3 mile along the towpath to number 3 Lock Cottage.
