Let’s hear it for the cast of dance show Footloose

A YEAR after wowing the crowds of Leamington with their take on Fame, the young movers and shakers of the Spa Theatre Company are back.

And members of the amateur dramatics group are confident that their production of Footloose, the Musical will be just as good - if not, better.

Based on the 1984 hit movie, which launched the careers of Kevin Bacon and Sarah Jessica Parker, the show features fabulous dance routines, as well as musical numbers such as Holding On For A Hero, I Can’t Stand Still, Let’s Hear It For The Boy and, of course, the iconic title song Footloose.

When Ren McCormack’s mother loses her job - his father having walked out on them some years before - they are forced to leave Chicago and move to the small town of Bomont.

Ren is devastated at having to leave his big city life and friends behind, but on arrival in Bomont he finds that things are even worse than he feared.

As the result of a tragic road accident some years earlier, in which a number of the town’s young people died, dancing and listening to rock ’n’ roll music are illegal.

Unable to accept this state of affairs, Ren soon finds himself at odds with the townsfolk and in particular church minister, Shaw Moore, whose son was one of those killed in the crash.

With the help of Shaw’s rebellious daughter, Ariel, and new friends Willard and Rusty, he sets out to make the town change its mind.

Since it was founded as a children’s drama group by Phyl Harris in 1981, the Spa Theatre Company has grown from strength to strength and now stages two shows in Leamington every year.

The Junior Company, for seven to 16-year-olds, runs its annual production in the spring, while the Senior Company, for people aged 16 and above, performs in the autumn. To find out more, go online.
