Wellesbourne pupils to take part in BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time

The Year One gardening group at Wellesbourne CE Primary School will take part in a recording of BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time.

The school, whose garden was opened in 2009, is lined up to be one of the featured on-location recordings for a future broadcast.

The school garden is supported by Wellesbourne in Bloom, which provided the poly tunnel, and volunteers from the Wellesbourne Allotment Society helped advise and work with the children, as well as building raised beds and laying slabs.

Rebecca Coates, the school club joint co-ordinator, said: “We’re really thrilled that the children will have a chance to meet the BBC’s experts and be part of the event.

“We have such a vibrant gardening group here and the reward is when their hard work comes to fruition and they can see and eat their own produce.

“It’s just so important to engage and encourage them at an early age and with the BBC coming, it’s an exciting time for them all.”

Future plans for the young gardeners could include selling their produce as part of learning business skills and about the food chain.

They join gardeners from the Wellesbourne Allotment Society, Compton Verney, Charlecote Park, Wellesbourne in Bloom, University of Warwick - Warwick Crop Centre and the Wellesbourne & Walton Horticultural Society in organising the venue and hosting the BBC .

Two programmes will be recorded on February 23 at the Stratford Arts House on Rother Street. Doors open at 5.30pm and recording starts at 6.30pm. Tickets £4.50. Call 01789 207100.
