A cardboard city in the heart of Sydenham

A CARDBOARD city sprang up in Sydenham last week as children learnt about the many facets of building a community.

The Sydni Centre had saved cardboard boxes and egg crates all summer for the activity, in which children built a city of their own.

Youth worker George Hardwick led the activity, encouraging children to debate whether their ideal city would need a clock tower, a church or a football stadium.

Sydni Centre manager Kate Cliffe said: “I’ve never seen such a group of quiet and concentrated five to 11-year-olds. It really captured their imagination.”

The children also played games and looked at themes of shelter and homelessness.

Ms Cliffe added: “We try to give out holiday activities some sort of meaning behind the fun.

“We try to get young people thinking about their community and their role in it from an early age.

The activity was funded by Positive About Young People.
