Royal Leamington Spa held an open day last Sunday to introduce newcomers to the sport.

The club’s coaches and members were on hand to welcome more than 20 potential players, who then had the opportunity to try their hand at the game.

The club is now looking forward to many of these attending weekly coaching sessions and eventually joining the club.

Meanwhile, Leamington’s men claimed a convincing 112-80 victory over Bilton in a five-rink friendly at Victoria Park.

RLS were always in control, with Malcolm Wickens skipping a 25-8 for the highest winning rink.

Bill Edkins (29-17), Andrew Woodward (19-13) and M Wallace (25-17) were also successful, with Dick Allibon slipping to a 25-14 defeat.

Whitnash progressed to the next round of the Top Club with a 4-1 success over The Grange (Rugby).

Graham Cluff and Andy Shuttleworth won the two-wood and four-wood singles, respectively, while Peter Honey and Derek Owen teamed up to win the pairs.

And, despite a defeat for John Loveridge, Pete Gilbert and Colin Haywood in the triples, Mick Davis, Geoff Barnes, Greville Reader and Alfie Distin took the rink win to give Whitnash a comfortable victory.

Whitnash’s ladies have made a fine start to the season, with a 51-40 triples win at Banbury Chestnuts following up a hard-fought 57-55 victory over Three Spires.

Maureen Tims was the standout performer at Three Spires, skipping her triple to a 23-14 success, while Sue Owen’s emphatic 20-9 win proved the difference against Banbury.

Keith Francis enjoyed two fine rink wins as Lillington enjoyed mixed fortunes in their friendly clashes against Bidford and Home Guard.

Francis skipped the highest winning rink - 23-14 - as Lillington beat Home Guard 87-80 in a five-rink encounter. Geoff Ward (15-13) and Malcolm Welch (16-15) were the other successful Lillington bowlers.

However, despite Francis pulling off a 18-15 win at Bidford and Nigel Roach (16-13) and Dennis Lee (18-11) also winning, defeats for Welch, Mike Kelly and Nick Simmonds condemned Lillington to a 110-98 defeat.

A busy few days for Warwickshire County Council Staff saw them win two and lose two of their fixtures.

Gordon McClean (15-9) and Richard Sharp (13-11) skipped wins in a three-shot defeat to Corley in a mixed friendly triple cut short by the rain and Sharp was again successful in the clash against Wellesbourne, with his emphatic 34-4 win helping Staff run out victors by 43 shots.

Barry Grant (21-9) and Brian Wakefield (23-7) also secured wins against Wellesbourne, who replied through A Barker (16-10) and C Such (18-9).

A heavy 31-10 defeat for Alex MacKintosh almost proved costly in a mixed friendly against Whitnash, but wins for Ken Dorsett (22-7), McClean (16-13), Eric Heath (16-14) and Sharp (14-10) ensured Staff shaded it by three shots. Finally, a 19-10 win for Frank Jackson and a 19-14 success for Grant proved in vain as Staff slumped to a 87-73 defeat at home to St Barbara’s.
