Ann and Sandra’s fundraising party

TO mark International Women’s Day a former Warwick Hospital nurse and a retired Leamington teacher invited their friends to a fund-raising coffee morning and table top sale.

And the event was so well supported last Thursday that the pair have been able to hand over a cheque for £485 to Oxfam for specific use on women’s health, education and business projects.

Sandra, who taught at schools throughout the district, threw open the doors to her home in Willes Road, Leamington, for the occasion and was delighted to welcome nearly 50 visitors.

She said: “Some of us have known each other since our children were young and it was wonderful that we were able to take time in this increasingly busy world to catch up while supporting women in other parts of the world.

“Everybody was so generous, baking cakes and donating items for sale as well as buying on the day. It made it all worthwhile.”

At another Women’s Day event, mums, toddlers and babies gathered at St Mark’s Church in Leamington, to celebrate with a series of themed activites.

Sarah Cox, of the NCT Warwickshire Kaleiodoscope group, which meets on Thursay afternoons, said toddlers were helped to make Mother’s Day cards while there was also advice on breatfeeding issues and a chance to meet other new and expectant parents.
