Asda shoppers show heart for charity

THERE was no shortage of Christmas spirit at Asda in Sydenham during the festive period.

Customers gave £250 worth of brand new presents to the supermarket to be donated to disadvantaged children as part of a campaign with the Have a Heart charity.

Shoppers were encouraged to spend about £5 extra on a present suitable for children aged from newborn to 18 when buying their Christmas shopping and to leave them in a specially decorated trolley.

The gifts were given to Refuge Warwickshire (Leamington Spa), a hostel for women and their children who are trying to escape domestic violence.

Anita Kanwar, the supermarket’s community colleague, said: “It was brilliant - really good.

“Times are hard at the moment so it was really nice for us to be able to say to customers that they had bought presents for children who were less fortunate at that time of year.”

The Sydenham branch’s next community campaign will be aimed at rewarding Campion School pupils for good attendance.
