Blistering success for fundraisers from Princethorpe College

There were a few grunts and groans when pupils and staff returned to school for the week.

But it wasn’t after a weekend of wild partying or heavy-duty DIY causing the groans at Princethorpe College – 30 of them clocked up 672 miles between them to raise £3,000 for the charity Mary’s Meals.

Staff, parents and sixth formers had to each walk 24 miles in under seven hours and 59 minutes for the charity that provides free school meals in some of the world’s poorest communities, helping more than 900,000 children.

The route from Ryton to Meriden was lead by headmaster Ed Hester and head boy Simon Fisher, who set a cracking pace and achieved a new school record for the annual endurance test – finishing in six hours and 45 minutes, with the final walker coming in at eight hours and 30 minutes.

Assistant head of sixth form Rod Isaacs, who organised it and completed the challenge, said: “We are expecting sponsorship to amount to £3,000, which will add to the £3,500 for Mary’s Meals already raised this academic year.”

Sixth former Melissa Scott said: “I have never eaten so many bananas in one day or had so many blisters. Whilst I was in agony when I crossed the line, I’m already thinking that next year I might up the challenge to have a go at the 40-mile Coventry Way Walk that some students will be attempting soon.”
