Two Southam brothers are preparing to cycle 80 miles this month to raise money for what they think is an “amazing” Warwick charity.

Paul and Richard Wallace have both signed up to take part in the Myton Hospices’ Cycle Challenge on Sunday August 18 in memory of Paul’s mother-in-law Jane Cunningham, who died at the Warwick hospice two years ago.

Paul said: “Myton is an amazing place and it is not until you experience it first-hand that you appreciate what happens. We were there as a family every day and staying overnight and they were fantastic.

“Jane knew we were fundraising for Myton and was always very proud of what we were doing.”

Richard, Paul and his wife Helen have raised more than £6,000 for the charity over the past two years by taking part in fundraising events including runs, cycles and Myton’s Moonlight Walk.

The ride will be perfect training for Paul who has signed up to cycle 320 miles from London to Paris for Myton next month. Earlier this year, the 33-year-old also completed a 170-mile coast-to-coast ride in 15 hours to raise money for the charity.

But it is going to be more challenging than ever for 36-year-old Richard, who is determined to finish despite suffering from serious back pain.

He said: “I have had some major back issues this year and it was touch and go whether I would be able to take part. Eighty miles would be hard enough on a good day and it will be even more of a challenge this year. Myton is such a wonderful place and means a lot to me. I just hope it isn’t too painful.”

Riders can choose to cycle 45, 60 or 80 miles, with all routes starting and ending at the Warwick hospice in Myton Lane. Cyclists can refuel and relax with a barbecue at the hospice’s gardens after the event.

Registration costs between £15 and £25 depending on the route chosen and includes the barbecue and a finisher’s medal.

To sign up to take part in the cycle challenge, which is sponsored by Western Power Distribution, visit www.mytonhospice.org or call Beth Nicholson on 838827.
