Bugsy Malone production was a grand slam

THEY could be anything that they want to be.

Pupils from all age groups at Campion School in Sydenham brought 1920s American gangsters, molls and hoodlums back to life in a production of Bugsy Malone this week.

They opened the doors of the infamous Fat Sam’s Grand Slam in their performance of the popular musical, best known as a 1970s film starring an all-child cast which included a young Jodie Foster.

The show tells the story of crafty but likeable Bugsy and his rise in the criminal underworld in which rival kingpins Fat Sam and Dandy Dan are at war.

Bullets make way for ‘splurge’ and violence for fun, comedy, dancing and singing as the hero tries to leave town with his aspiring actress girlfriend Blousy.

A proud Helen Cook, the schools acting head of drama, said the production showcased the many talents of the school’s pupils, who rose to the challenge and in some cases surprised themselves.
