Burglars broke into a secure container next to the Castle Inn pub in Edgehill in the early hours of Friday January 10 and stole replicas of weapons that were used during the Battle of Edgehill - the first major battle of the English Civil War in 1642.

Nothing was taken apart of the replicas, which included two metal rifles, a flint lock rifle, a support spike, a pike and spear, a pikeman’s helmet, two brass Saxon axes and a metal breast plate.

The pub, which overlooks the battlefield where the famous battle took place, had closed for refurbishment on January 1 - and Claire Cooper, who runs the Castle Inn with her fiance Mark Higgs, says it is vital that the items are returned before it reopens in March.

She said: “They are all replicas, but they are old enough to be valuable - and they are part of the building. The pub was built 100 years after the Battle of Edgehill and those weapons represent that history.”

Miss Cooper said police officers have reason to believe that someone has attempted to sell on the stolen items, but none have been located.

Images of the stolen items can be seen on the pub’s Facebook page. Anyone who may have information relating to the burglary is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
