Cancer survivor Antony is sponsoring mums’ moonlight walk

WHAT started as a chat in the school playground will become a real feat of endurance tomorrow (Saturday) when a group of Bishops Tachbrook mums ‘power walk’ the route of the London Marathon to raise money to fight cancer.

And among their sponsors is a man who has twice survived the disease.

The Warwick Walkie Talkies will be taking on the 26.2 mile Walk the Walk Moonwalk in aid of Breast Cancer Research.

All live in Warwick Gates or Bishops Tachbrook and many have children at Bishops Tachbrook Primary School. While none have had cancer themselves, all know someone who has suffered from the disease.

Sarah Brewster, one of those taking part, said: “It started with a conversation in the playground and evolved from there. We all have personal reasons to take part.”

The group hopes to complete the course quicker than the average time of 6.5 hours, and have been training since before February. So far they have raised £5,000 with events but hope to reach £10,000 with a Party in the Park planned at Jephson Gardens on May 18.

Among the sponsors is Warwick Gates estate agent Antony Beltran. Mr Beltran, who owns Fine Homes, recovered from leukaemia aged 11 after his brother gave him a bone marrow transplant and recently had a tumour removed from one of his kidneys.

Having returned to work after keyhole surgery, he is donating £500 upfront with a pledge to donate another £100 for every sale he completes for people who contact him and mention the Warwick Walkie Talkies.

Mr Beltran said: “There aren’t many words that can describe the feeling when you get diagnosed. There are no words for what it does to you and what it does to people around you.

“It’s nice to be in a position to be able to help.”
